claudia rankine being right

I can’t get a link to the piece directly, but click on “AWP” here and read Claudia Rankine’s response to a Tony Hoagland poem. Definitely worth a read.

You can read the poem here. I had originally intended to write a bit of a response, wondering if there are parts of it that are challenging white stereotypes, or bringing to light the inherent tribalism of people in order to investigate it more thoroughly. But the more I read the poem, the more I try to find some redeeming value in it, the more I realize I’m trying. And I won’t be a person who is trying to find good in something that is bad, racist, and reliant upon lazy, ugly imaginings. There’s too much stuff in the world that is worth parsing and investigating. This ain’t it. I link to Rankine’s response, though, because a poem like this, written by one of the more known poets out there, also shouldn’t just be ignored.
